What does it mean to perfect my craft?

July 23, 2021

This is a reflection on one of my primary goals in becoming an Indie developer, to perfect my craft. So what does that mean?

You know the saying, “practice makes perfect”? Personally I don’t think it’s realistic to think you’ll be perfect after hours of practice. You’ll get better, and you’ll likely be in a better position than many others, but will you be perfect? I’ve contemplated this, can you truly be perfect. Are we setting ourselves up to be overwhelmed trying to achieve something we can’t obtain? It's likely better to say "practice makes better"

Ok, a little pessimistic here. It’s not bad trying to “perfect” something, trying to work so hard to obtain a higher goal. I’m all for that but I want to set my own expectation, I’m starting from zero. I have a long way to go as an indie developer. Perfecting my craft to me means: Building complex systems, learn more about architecture, be proficient in designing, understand business aspects to succeed, continue trying new things for new businesses. Perfecting my craft means creating a path where I can continue building my craft. That’s meta, but if I can use my craft to make a living, I can essential work on my craft for ever and get better one day at a time.

And… that’s what I’m after, getting just a little better one day at a time, knowing that my progress will be slow gives me a realistic view of what I’m after. I’ll work consistently, I’ll put my all to make my goals a reality. So there you have it, this is what it means perfecting my craft. There’s more to it but in a nutshell I’m going to work on "Bettering my craft". Looking forward to sharing more about what that looks like.
